Chalk Lettering by Dana Tanamachi
November 11, 2011
I came across Dana Tanamachi‘s work via a project she did for Garden & Gun magazine. Dana works for Louise Fili Ltd. in New York, which also produced another fantastic letter/designer that I’ve written about, Jessica Hische.
On the side, Dana specializes in creating beautiful illustrative lettering out of chalk. She doesn’t use stencils or project an image on a wall, it’s just from referring to a small piece of paper with her design on it.

She recently did windows for Rugby Ralph Lauren for their Tweed Run:

I love this style of typography!
I know, I love the mix of different typefaces.
I dunno how to say… it is fantastic….yet brilliant. She has a great sense with type…really want to see one of it for close.:-)
Incredible. Looks like it would be a challenge in Photoshop. To think she does it all by hand… wowzer.
I would assume she does a hand sketch, refines it in Illustrator with fonts and custom letters, and prints that as a reference. Some of those letters look like fonts but I can’t remember the names.
