The Cultivated Life of Jean-Philippe Delhomme
Illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme first came to my attention almost 20 years ago via his beautiful ads for Barneys New York. GQ readers probably know him best for his illustrations for the Style Guy column written by Glenn O’Brien, who originally collaborated with Delhomme on those Barneys ads. I’ve always liked how Delhomme takes serious subjects or people and injects some humor into them without being (too) mean-spirited. Can you tell the details of the clothes in his advertisements? No, but that’s not the point. It’s about the spirit of the clothing or store that the ads are trying to convey.
Delhomme has published several books, the most recent being The Cultivated Life, written and illustrated by him. My wife is an avid collector of fashion illustrations (you should see the walls of our place, you wouldn’t think a guy lived here) and adores Delhomme’s work. She even bought his children’s book just for the illustrations.
Delhomme also runs a blog called The Unknown Hipster filled with sketches and stories. Check it out.
