Polaroid Branding

June 14, 2010

Paul Giambara was an in-house art director for Polaroid back in the 1950s when he was charged with the redesign of their brand in order to compete with Kodak, whose yellow and red dominated the marketplace. You can read his blog for the full story of his 20 years of branding work for Polaroid. The clean, modern packaging is a precursor to Apple packaging today.

For a little background on the Polaroid SX-70 camera, here is the educational film by the Eames Office that Polaroid commissioned:

Also of interest was Paul’s design work for Tonka Toys.

I collect polaroid cameras and his work is still relevant today. I can imagine that when it hit the market it was revolutionary.
