Disneyland After Dark

March 7, 2011

After attending Dapper Day at Disneyland a few weeks ago, I came across the Disneyland USA dvd collection at the library. The 2 disc set contains the live broadcast of opening day, a 10th Anniversary special, as well as the 1962 Disneyland After Dark television special. Any of the Disneyland specials were glorified commercials, but this had a little more style than the rest. Back in the day, Disneyland had a pretty swinging nightlife that wasn’t focused on huge shows like Fantasmic or World of Color that require sitting for 4+ hours so you get a good spot. And like nightlife outside the park, people got dressed up for an evening out. Some inspiration for the next Dapper Day.

Arrive in style on the sleek new Monorail. Next stop, Tomorrowland! Unfortunately, after the remodel 10 years ago, the station no longer looks like this, and the hotel shopping arcade behind it is now a Rainforest Cafe. Sigh.

Mouseketeer Annette Funicello in a dress I want my wife to wear at the next Dapper Day. I guess that means I’ll have to get a tan blazer like teen crooner Bobby Rydell.

A casually attired crowd watching the fireworks. They’re casual but still relatively neat. No sweatshirts or flip-flops on any of them.

What has so enamored the diners in the last 3 photographs?

Ahh, the hula girls at the Tahitian Terrace.

The highlight for me was the Louis Armstrong performance aboard the Mark Twain riverboat. Definitely look that one up on youtube.

Quite a dapper audience.

Louis is looking pretty dapper too.

Many doilies were killed to make these dresses.

Walt gets suave with a feather cap to close out the show.

Love the tone of these images. Older just looks better sometimes.
